According to FreshBooks’ Annual Report re: Self-Employment, it looks like we’re moving to the home for work more than ever before. I’m all about that, of course!

And women! We’re underrepresented. In 2019, 65% were men-owned businesses and only 35% were women-owned. Represent!

Are we more timid or less interested? What? I’d really love to know (those of you who are still in a 9-5) what’s keeping you there? Benefits? Fear?

It is scary to jump into self-employment when you have a steady income. I know. I was forced into it.  And I have to say it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Having my own business allows me more freedom. I can work when I want, in whatever state of clothing I want or even naked! (I don’t, but hey… That doesn’t mean you can’t.) But there are issues you need to realize…

I will be honest, it takes about 2 years before you really get a business going. Still, if you have the wherewithal, I strongly recommend starting a business! It’s the best!

Just be sure that it’s a business that people need and/or want. I’ve seen businesses that I knew would never fly and couldn’t say a word about it — not because I’d lose the biz, but because the client was part of something bigger that sent the client in that direction. I just shut up and build their sites, but my stories would amaze you. Breaks my heart when that happens.

Check Google Trends and see if you can figure out whether your niche will work before you leap. And be specific! You can’t think that your target audience is “everyone” because it’s just NOT. Narrow that down until you really hit the niche spot on. And then, see how popular it is. If it’s not… Move along. Start over. Otherwise, you’ll NEVER be successful. It doesn’t hurt to have a reputation in your niche first, either. I already had a rep and it still took 2 years for my business to support us entirely.

Plus, I have been working from home since my daughter was born almost 30 years ago. I’m used to the discipline. If you’re someone who can’t regulate their time, don’t try it. If you’re disciplined AND persevere, you can have your own business, too! And then, when you need a website or coaching or anything, just come back and let me know! That’s what this company is for. We help new business owners to get started and coach them on marketing, Web design and development, copywriting, social media, etc. We know every facet of doing business online.

We can totally help.
